Burnt Island Lighthouse DOES NOT receive ANY public funding through the State of Maine. It is supported by donations, the fantastic lighthouse tour, and volunteers who help with upkeep and maintenance. It is open to the public (you don't have to take the awesome tour and boat ride), but you do have to get to/from the island on your own. The tour is a must-do in my opinion. You would miss a lot of interesting information if you just walked around on your own.
