Yes, it is possible -and even better- to visit the place without tour guide, may be with the help of a booklet. There are parking places, but outside the walls of the town, 10-15 minutes of walk from Palazzo Ducale. The closest and easiest is "Borgo Mercatale", a square just outside the walls on the west side of the town (you will easily see the signal). Even if you just go around the town you are bound to find it.
Since the audioguide seems to be not a good idea, are there private guides who can do a tour in English (we don't want to have a tour of the whole town, just sounds like it would be worthwhile for the Palace)?
