The Senate’s long day of voting has churned into a long night as Republican leaders grasp for ways to shore up support for President Donald Trump’s big bill of tax breaks and spending cuts.

Some conservative senators have demanded a vote on that amendment, with at least one, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, suggesting his vote on the overall package might be contingent on its passing.

The bill would extend tax cuts from Trump’s first term and slash more than $1.1 trillion from Medicaid and other health-care programs.

Thune wouldn’t say Monday morning whether Republicans have the votes to pass the bill, and he predicted the marathon vote-a-rama on amendments would drag on late into the day.
