Aortic regurgitation implies that the aortic valve leaks during diastole, such that blood regurgitates back from the aorta into the left ventricle. This results in volume overload in the left ventricle during diastole.

The study illustrates the use of the Carpentier classification system for classifying the causes of regurgitation with a case series.
