The routes to the summit beyond the Hotlum-Bolam Ridge are accessed via the Brewer Creek Trail. Consequently, any north side attempt at Mount Shasta’s summit is reached via the North Gate Trail, which means that this can be a heavily used path at times.

2024年10月26日 · The North Gate Trail sets off to the southeast at a very moderate grade. The trail passes through a fairly open red fir forest. In fairly short order, the path crosses a dry gulch. For those who want to reach the climbing routes in haste, this dry gulch is the way to go. For those who want a more leisurely climb, continue on the main trail.

Those who climb its infrequently visited summit are treated to spectacular vistas of Mount Shasta and much of northernmost California and into southern Oregon. There are four plugs in the North Gate region on Mount Shasta. 8,852 is the highest and, along with neighboring 8,798, it is the most rugged of the four domes.

Shasta’s northeast side is a vast and scenic glaciated wilderness. The climbing routes follow long, steep snow pitches between the Hotlum, Bolam, and Wintun glaciers. Basecamp is pitched by snowmelt springs at 9,500’ on large glacial moraines. This route is for climbers looking for a moderate glacier climb and is best June-August.

For climbers or hikers, enjoy the first few miles switchbacking through the forest of large Red Firs. You'll begin to gain the krummholz trees and soon step into the alpine. A great view of the Hot/Bol route will been seen as you round the bend and find the trail steepening up to the high camp.

North Gate is a large volcanic dome on the north side of Mount Shasta. The Northgate trail winds near the 7,915 foot summit on its way to the climbing routes up the Bolam and Hotlum Glaciers. Mud Creek Canyon

It follows a 7,000 vertical foot ascent that exposes the climber to steep snow and ice, rock fall, and weather extremes. The best time to climb is usually April through June and sometimes July, rarely August through November.
