The Southern New England Railway was a project of the Grand Trunk Railway (GT) to build a railroad from the GT-owned Central Vermont Railway at Palmer, Massachusetts south and east to the all-weather port of Providence, Rhode Island.

By 1867, it had become the largest railroad system in the world by accumulating more than 2,055 km (1,277 mi) of track that connected locations between its ocean port at Portland, Maine, its river port at Rivière-du-Loup, the three northern New England states, and much of the southern areas of the new provinces of Quebec and Ontario.

The Southern New England Railway was never actually a railway. Rather, it proved to be the ill-fated attempt by the Grand Trunk Railroad to disrupt established and stiff railroad competition in the burgeoning New England market.

After the war, railroad mileage in New England began to shrink, in line with national trends. [13] With the bankruptcy of the Grand Trunk system in the early 1920s the line from Portland to Montreal was nationalized as the Berlin subdivision of the Canadian National Railway in 1923.
