There are significant ionic clay deposits in South China, but not in Mongolia. Inner Mongolia (and especially the parts of Inner Mongolia in Manchuria) weren’t really Sinicized through major Han immigration until the 19th century. If this Mongolia was established either as an independent country or as a Russian protectorate earlier than historically, Inner Mongolia would likely be majority Mongol.
