In Hagia Sophia, there are 140 monolithic columns which were brought from different places of the world. For instance; the 8 porphyry columns whose color of purple symbolize nobility of the Byzantine Empire, are from Egypt and stand under semi domes. There are also 8 green columns from Artemis Temple in Ephesus.

Hagia Sophia has many round and square columns in Proconnesian marble. The island quarries are only 70 nautical miles from Constantinople and produced huge quantities of marble for the city as well as the church.

Visitors to Hagia Sophia were alarmed to see titling columns in the galleries that looked like they would collapse in the next earthquake. In the 1850 restoration of Hagia Sophia the Fossatis reset a number of the worst ones. You can see the see marks in the floors were the bases used to set.

The ‘’Sweating’’ Column: On the northern corner of the Hagia Sophia, the inner side of the last door on the left, stands the “sweating column”, which is damp and wet in all seasons. The column is also known as “perspiring column” or “wishing column”.
