A Battlemaster Fighter build with a 1-level dip in War Cleric, and Crossbow Expert feat, would indeed allow 3 shots per round of a heavy crossbow for a few rounds. And Sharpshooter could add to that. This includes reloading a repeating crossbow from the clip. The Rapid Reload feat reduces reloading to a free action for hand/light crossbows and a move action for heavy crossbows. If you have multiple attacks from a high base attack bonus, you can only make 1 attack with a crossbow, since it has to be reloaded.

All users of the Light Crossbow and Hand Crossbow in the MM apply Dex bonus to the damage roll. Most other users of the Heavy Crossbow have +0 Dex mod and so have no damage bonus, but the Half-Red Dragon Veteran (p.180) has a +1 Dex mod that applies to the damage roll of the Heavy Crossbow. \$\endgroup\$ –

A light crossbow (1d8, 80/320 range), or a hand crossbow (1d6, 30/120 range), do not benefit from "Extra Attack". A light crossbow is worse in terms of range, and damage (with Extra Attack) than the longbow. A light crossbow is on par for range with the shortbow, and worse for damage (with Extra Attack).
