This festival celebrates the Bhagavad Gita, a 700-verse Hindu scripture that is part of the Indian epic Mahabharata. The festival is celebrated mainly in Kurukshetra, Haryana. The venue of the festival adds to the sacredness of the event.

In 2016, the Government of Haryana organized the International Gita Mahotsav from 6 to 10 December. Pranab Mukherjee, President of India, was to inaugurate the Mahotsav; later it was done by Kaptan Singh Solanki, Governor of Haryana, and Manohar Lal Khattar, Chief Minister. [8]

In the year 2016, Government of Haryana took a decision to celebrate the festival of Gita Jayanti as International Gita Mahotsav in which more than two million people visited Kurukshetra which in fact proved a mile stone in the history of celebration of Gita Jayanti in Kurukshetra.
