Live Oak is a medium-sized showy long-lived evergreen tree that may grow 40 to 80 feet tall. It is found in the coastal plains of VA, NC and southward along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. It has a broad crown, rarely grows over 50 feet tall with gnarled branches reaching out to 40 to 100 feet wide, often seen with Spanish moss hanging from them.

Live oak grows across the southern third of Louisiana, except for some barrier islands and scattered parts of the most southern parishes. Live oak's range continues into Texas and narrows to hug the coast until just past Port Lavaca, Texas. [9]

Sand live oak, Quercus virginiana var. geminata (Q. geminata), grows on sandy soil, is more upright and open-crowned in habit, has thick revolute leaves and acorns produced in pairs. It may be more suited for street tree planting due to the smaller size.

Live oak leaves are simple, alternate, and occasionally have a serrated margin near the tip; they range from 2”- 4” in length with a width of 0.5” - 2”. The foliage is thick and glossy with an oblong to elliptical shape. They are typically dark green on top with a lighter underside.
