If their portrait disappears then you left that body behind (and no you can't get back for it, just in an game thing) and can't use breath of life (1 round after death) or raise dead (few hours after death I think).

You can definitely go back and buy a scroll, hell, you don't even need to go back, the game assumes the dead body is always with you. You can revive them at anytime with raise dead, I suggest you keep ahold of all diamonds you find because the cleric spell of the same name requires them to cast as well.
