This review focuses on the following aspects: The types of probiotics using in the treatment of allergic rhinitis, approaches of administration, its safety, mechanisms of action, treating results, and the perspectives to improve effectiveness of probiotics in the treatment of allergic rhinitis.

To evaluate the efficacy of different probiotic species in the treatment of Allergic rhinitis (AR), we used network meta-analysis (NMA), which provides a foundation for evidence-based therapeutic selection.

Probiotics in the treatment of AR have been shown to improve quality of life, the total nasal and ocular symptom scores, the daily total symptom scores and Th1/Th2 ratio. No difference was ascertained for rhinitis total symptom score, and the rates of antigen-specific IgE, total IgE, IL-10, INFG and eosinophil.

Overall, 8 of 9 probiotic types alleviated at least one clinical symptom of allergic rhinitis. The meta-analysis results showed that, neither L. paracasei Lp33 (SMD = -1.61, 95% CI -4.67, 1.45) nor L. rhamnosus GG (SMD = -1.00, 95% CI -3.01, 1.00) had significant efficacy for reducing nasal symptom scores.

Several human studies have evaluated the efficacy and safety of probiotics in allergic rhinitis; however, evidence for their use has yet to be firmly established. We undertook a systematic review and meta-analysis aiming to address the effect and safety of probiotics on allergic rhinitis.
