They have free pickup and drop off services so you can leave your car at home. If you've got a Costco membership, it's cheaper to rent your car via Costco instead. Some credit cards come with rental car insurance built in. Check your credit cards member benefits. You might not need to buy insurance. I was just in this situation a few weeks ago.

As the title says - we rented a car in Japan and loved every minute of it. To top it off, tolls, gas and parking were much cheaper than we expected. We decided to rent a car in Odawara (on May 13, 2024), keep it for a week and return it in Osaka. It was pricey to return the car so far away, but in our opinion, worth every penny.
