This essay interrogates those and other subversive strategies of performing skin color which appear in the works of contemporary visual artists of Romani descent. In their taxonomy of Romani representations, Jerzy Ficowski and Adam Bartosz identify three canonical portrayals: criminal, demonic, and operatic.
