The Japanese destroyer Mutsuki (睦月, "January") was the name ship of her class of twelve destroyers built for the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) during the 1920s. During the Pacific War, she participated in the Battle of Wake Island in December 1941 and the occupations of New Guinea and the Solomon Islands in early 1942.

The Mutsuki-class destroyers were built with the same main battery as the Kamikaze-class, consisting of four Type 3 120 mm 45 caliber naval guns in single open mounts, exposed to the weather except for a small shield. These were located one forward, two aft (placed back-to-back), and one amidships.

On 13 December 1944, in the Sibuyan Sea, bombardment by an F4U Corsair rendered her navigable and her destroyer Kiri disposed of her bombardment. 2023年10月20日 · The Mutsuki class was the first to be fitted with the newly developed 24-inch (610 mm) torpedoes, with greater range and larger warhead than previous torpedoes in the Japanese inventory. Originally Type 8 torpedoes were carried, arranged in two triple mountings.

They were the first Japanese vessels armed with 24" torpedo tubes. Most of them were spared the rigors of front-line combat and consigned to rear-echelon escort duties. Six of them were rebuilt in 1941-42 as fast transports; a role which exposed them to more danger in trying to resupply beleagured island garrisions.
