Levator scapulae tension lines refer to the patterns of muscle tightness and strain that develop due to dysfunction, overuse, or compensatory loading. The levator scapulae originates from the transverse processes of C1 to C4 and inserts into the superior angle of the scapula. Tension often runs from the upper cervical spine down toward the superior angle of the scapula. The levator scapulae muscle elevates the shoulder to the ear and is implicated in a range of shoulder and stiff neck problems. It is often overworked when we are tense or stressed. Trigger points in the levator scapulae often appear as a result of poor posture; constant use of heavy ill-fitting back packs; and use of telephones and tablet devices (particularly whilst standing).
