On this day in 1941, the massacre at Babi Yar took place - one of the largest massacres of Jews during the Holocaust. Although many Jews left Kyiv once Operation Barbarossa began in June 1941, there was still a significant Jewish population there in September of that year. Many of the people who stayed behind were those who could not easily leave: women, children, elderly, and the sick.
